The America’s Test Kitchen, Culinary Institute of America’s and the number of other publications promote Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Control Blender as the best alternative to commercial standards machines like Vitamix but at the half price. No doubt, people do not hesitate and to buy the blender. However, even at the glance, it is obvious that this comparison is not fair. The Breville only comes with 750 watts motor that is about a half of Vitamix’s. It has the only 1-year limited warranty as opposed to the 7 years full warranty for Vitamix and the number of other arguments not to the credit of Breville.
That is why we decide to look closely at this machine and settle if it is really a serious alternative to industrial standards blenders.

Functionality and Versatility
Smoothie: Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Blender is able to blend smooth consistency drinks only from soft ingredients. It will not make smooth smoothies from tough or leafy ingredients like carrot, kale and other but deliver chunky or grainy output. It does not matter what setting is used, this machine will not blend green smoothie ingredients into a smooth liquid.
This machine also will not pulverize nuts or dates added to the smoothies but leave the chunks in the drink. Liquefying strawberry or blueberry seeds is also the unattainable task for this blender, it will leave them intact as residues in the drink.
Juicing: Since this machine is not able to produce really smooth smoothie it will not suite for making the “whole juice” also.
Frozen ingredients/desserts: The advertising of the Breville ice crushing power is a bit too optimistic. This machine will shave only small and thin ice cube into the snow consistency. It will pulverize well only small ice cube or pieces of frozen ingredients, the user will need to add some liquid to process the large pieces. It is really challenging task to pulverize frozen fruits without an airlock, thus it requires to stop the blender and push ingredients manually. And if the user wishes to make some frozen desserts then it could be done only with some efforts. Processing frozen ingredients also tend to overload the gadget with following automatic system shut off. So, the crushing ice is not the forte of this machine.
Soup/ hot ingredients: The Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Control machine is not designed for processing hot ingredients and require to cool them down before the blending. So, this machine cannot make hot soups heating it via frictions (the signature function for proper heavy duty blender, so Breville must be excluded from this category and thus not suited for comparing with Vitamix).
Pureeing: The machine will hardly mash boiled potato or even steamed parsnip or broccoli properly and no questions it is able pureeing any raw vegetables. Processing any thick texture make this motor overheating with triggering shut off of the system. The user manual also requires blending all the heavy mixture for less than 10 seconds then stop blender for stirring the ingredients and continue.
Chopping/food prep: The Breville is quite good at performing light duty job and will easy make the variety of salsa, salad dressing and, marinades recipes. However, to make proper dip it will require adding enough liquid. So the hummus could be done only with enough oil and other liquid added.
Nut milk: The Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Control machine is not suitable for making any nut milk as it is not able to process nuts properly even in smoothies.
Nut butter: This machine is not strong enough to make nut butter. The nut butter usually requires more power than this blender has (750 watts) and require the long period for processing while this machine can run only under 1 min without stopping.
Grinding/milling: The Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Control machine will grind coffee and soft grains like oats, but it will not make baking quality flour from hard grains like wheat or rice.
Dough/batter: The blender is not designed to knead dough what user manual clearly mentions also.
Although many reviewers claim that the spherical bottom of the Breville pitcher is designed to create proper vortex all the time and this is the distinguishing feature of this blender, in fact, it is not always true. The food is indeed well pulverized at the bottom of the pitcher where it is stacked. There is not enough vortex for pulling the ingredients above the spherical bottom down and thus require to stop gadget and manually mix them with the spatula. It is possible to use pulse function for this purpose, however, it disregards the unique idea of the spherically designed bottom.
In fact, Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Control gadget is light duty blender and not even designed to make mash potatoes. It is suitable only fruit smoothies and food prep tasks such as mayonnaises, salad dressing, and other mixers.

Speed Settings and Programs
Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere control panel comes with the on/off (to activate machine), the stop (to stop gadget during processing) buttons, 5 speeds ((1) Snow, (2) Mix, (3) Blend, (4) Liquefy, (5) Puree), two pre-set programs (Ice Crush and Smoothies) and Pulse mode. All the control panel button has illumination light when the blender is on. It also has LCD timer that counts up on speed settings (showing how many seconds passed) and down for pre-programmed settings (indicating for how long the setting is operated).
The gadget is not designed to be run over 1 min in one run, so the Smoothies and Ice Crushing settings are both pre-programmed for 1 minute operation time of blends and pulses in intervals. The user is supposed to repeat the settings if the desired result is not achieved in one go or if the result is achieved sooner than 60 seconds the stop button must be pressed to finish the blending. The user also can choose a pulse button, which also pulses until the stop button is pushed.
The 1 minute maximum blending time is another indication of the light duty blender, the commercial type machines like Vitamix can run up to 10 min in one go without harm to the system.
Ease of Using and Cleaning
Operating: Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere machine has the blades permanently inbuilt in the pitcher, so it is very easy to operate. Just place the jar on the base unit, fill it with ingredients, close the lid and run. The lid consists of two pad the lid and the removable cup what allow to add extra ingredients during the blending process. However, blender does not include tamper and requires to stop it for mixing the food or getting rid of air pockets. The air pocket also could be removed using the pulse function.
Cleaning: As any other blender with inbuilt blade assembly the Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Control is really easy to clean. The container is dishwasher safe. It also could be washed using the self-cleaning mode. Just fill the container with the water, add few drops of dishwashing liquid, and run it for 1 minute or less. It is advisable to hold the lid during the self-cleaning procedure because the bubbles may burst the top off.
Base Unit and Motor Power
Although the exterior design of Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere has the heavy duty die-cast metal base and looks very solid, it is equipped with only 750 watts motor and the plastic base unit socket for connecting the blade assembly to the drive system. What is obviously a weak side of the construction and questions the claim about the good built and performance of this machine. The blender, as a result, is able to handle only light duty tasks and could not perform any job that is usual for commercial type blenders.
However, the machine is equipped with an overload protector system to prevent overheating the motor and will extend the motor life expectancy. It also has a great cord storage that is neatly coiled around the base of the blender.
The Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Control Blender comes with 48 oz. (6 cups) Eastman Tritan copolyester container made from premium quality BPA-free and the lightweight polymer material. It also has clear measuring guides printed on the side. The container is shatter proof and temperature resistant what make it dishwasher safe that can survive repeated dishwasher cleaning. However, the container is not designed to for blending hot liquids what is the obvious drawback for the premium quality jar.
Another negative of the Breville container is the inaccurate design of spout that tends to splash the poured liquids after blending. And the lid fitted not very securely at the pitcher and keeps pulling off during blending.
The Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere designed with the blade assembly semi-permanently attached to the container but it could be removed with a special wrench if needed. The blades are strong and made from the surgical grade stainless steel to ensure them stay sharp for longer. The blades are constructed as 6-prong with two of them wide and straight, another four with serrated edges with medium and small teeth. The blades, bearing assembly and drive nut is also all-metal with a couple rubber sealing. The blades and all assembly are well made and good quality.
Colors: Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Control machine is available in stainless steel (Breville BBL605XL- $200) the most expensive, the Cranberry Red (BBL605CBXL -$190) and Black Sesame (Breville BBL605BSXL – $170) that is the cheapest one.
Certified Refurbished: The certified refurbished blender is available for this models and it will cost around $150.
Use in countries outside of USA/Canada: The Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere sold in the USA equipped with 110-120 voltage system. It is possible to use it in 220-240 voltage system countries over the voltage transformer. However, this machine is available to buy in many countries over local retailers so it is better to buy it locally and use over transformer if the user needs to take it abroad for a short period of time only.
The Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Control machine has not a powerful motor, no wonder it is not very loud. It outputs around 70 at low speed to 85 at high-speed decibels what is comparable to the sound from the dishwasher.
Warranty and Customer Service
Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere comes with only 1-year Limited warranty what is one of the shortest warranties in the industry. The Breville is quite good at replacing faulty units but if you decide to return the machine they will charge usually $40 fee.
The Customer Service is not very helpful and ones the warranty period is passed they unlikely to offer helpful solutions to the customer.
Optional Accessories and Attachments

Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Consumer Reviews
This blender has the very good recommendation from America’s Test Kitchen and other reputable reviewers so it has also may good review from the customers what is quite common when the heavy advertisement usually accompanied by the positive reviews from customer no matter how good the product in reality.
The Amazon rating varies from 4.0 for the most expensive model in stainless steel color to 4.4 for the cheapest model in Black Sesame color.
The price for the Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Control Blender is stable for majority retailers and only differ in the different color of the gadget. The Black sesame is cheapest and sold at around $170 and the stainless steel is most expensive and available at $200. There is certified refurbished model available for this blender which is sold at $150 usually.
Unfortunately, Breville BBL605XL Hemisphere Blender is not as excellent as the many reviews suggest. It is not able to handle tough ingredients in smoothies, has trouble with ice crushing and fairly weak motor. Advertisement insists that it pulls the contents towards the blades for homogeneous blending but this is not always true. It could be a very good machine if it had the price of under $50. It also could compete with some popular and not very popular blenders for under $100 but is it ridiculously overpriced and certainly underperform for the machine that costs $200.
